When scholars arrived at Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies on the first day of the 2015-2016 school year, they had an amazing show of community support: smiles, high-fives and encouragement from male leaders who came to welcome our 400 students. From recent college graduates, to accomplished non-profit leaders and educators, all of these gentlemen made the time and brought their A-game to create a special atmosphere. The crowd of supporters included representatives from the following organizations:
- Michigan State University College of Education
- Midnight Golf
- Alpa Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
- Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
- Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
- Bridge to Life
- HFA fathers
Educator Marini Calette Lee, Ph.D. organized the group. Dr. Lee, the owner and operator of MC Lee Educational Consulting, pictured bottom left with HFA: SCS Superintendent Nan Gill, also works at Michigan State University helping urban students apply for and succeed in college. “Detroit gets a bad rap,” she says. “We need to create a visual counter-narrative to all of the bad news we hear about our city and to have our children see people who are rooting for them – particularly for those children who might not currently have that type of role model in their lives.”
Ms. Constance Thomas, a Henry Ford Academy: Elementary School parent, remarked in a comment on Facebook, "Even before hitting the front door, I heard claps and rooting while walking across the street. Once we arrived at the front door, this melted my heart. This is one of the reasons my husband and I send our children here. The creative ways you all keep us parents and students engaged. Cheers to another school year start!"
